CURRICULUM
READING: There will be time every day for your child to read independently and aloud in our classroom. Our district uses the Making Meaning Curriculum and Reader’s Workshop model, in which nonfiction and fiction read aloud books will be used to teach your child various comprehension strategies as well as how to read and think at a high level. We will learn to choose good-fit books and build our reading stamina to be able to read independently for 30 minutes!
WRITING: Our Being a Writer curriculum correlates with our Making Meaning reading curriculum. It uses authentic children’s literature to teach the writing process and help students develop their own voice as writers. There are regular opportunities for discussion, to share writing with classmates, and for students to “publish” their work.
WORD WORK: We will use the Words Their Way phonics program to study words and spelling patterns. There is also a list of 200 High-Frequency Words that we will learn to recognize and read by the end of the year (see printables below). Words will be posted in our classroom and easily accessible for students to use in their writing. Studies show that when students have mastered a large number of words they are able to read more fluently and focus on making sense of what they are reading.
MATH: We use the Bridges in Mathematics program. This program blends direct instruction with time for students to investigate and explore. Students will focus on addition and subtraction, place value, shapes, and length measurement while developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and the ability to solve complex problems. Visit https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/families/bridges2 for additional resources, games, and apps you can use at home.
SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will continue to build their foundational understanding in the disciplines of citizenship and government, economics, geography, and history.
SCIENCE: We use the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill series called Science: A Closer Look. Topics of study include science skills and methods, weather, plants, matter (solids, liquids, and gases), and forces.
