MY PHILOSOPHY
I believe that homework should provide additional practice and help reinforce skills already taught in class. I also believe it’s a way to build responsibility and solid study habits. The National Education Association recommends no more than 10 minutes of homework per day for each grade, so please aim for 20 minutes for your 2nd grader. If it is taking your child longer than 20 minutes please let me know so we can work something else out.
2ND GRADE HOMEWORK
READING: Make time to read together for 20 minutes a night, at least five days a week, and record it on the calendar sent home each month. Then turn it in for a Classroom Reward Coupon! Students will have the option to bring good-fit books home to read from our classroom library and can also access some of their electronic resources to read from at home.
MATH: A Math Home Connection will be sent home each Friday and is expected to be returned the following Thursday. This gives you a week to find 20 minutes to complete it.
ONGOING: At the end of September will begin writing in our Life Books on Monday mornings. Be on the lookout for special items to bring in and tape into your Life Book and write about. These may include a ticket stub, brochure, flyer, photo, wrapper, receipt, item from nature, or any other small item that could be taped inside your notebook as a reminder of something important you did over the weekend or another time in your life that you could write about.
OPTIONAL Extension Activities: From time to time we will send home optional hands-on family activities as extensions of our learning. Have fun with these if you choose to do them!
UNFINISHED WORK: Occasionally work that was not completed in class may be sent home for your child to complete as homework. I will email you or write a note on top of the assignment to let you know when it needs to be returned.
**If you would like additional homework activities please access one of the electronic resources you have been given access to this year. You can also check out the activities on the Challenge Activities tab!
